Founded in 1864, historic Clarence Fillmore Cemetery is a beautiful cemetery located at 4580 Ransom Road in the Town of Clarence.
There are approximately 8,800 “permanent residents” in Clarence Fillmore’s 13 acres. Among its most notable residents are Colonel Asa Ransom (1765-1835), founder of the Town of Clarence, the oldest community in Erie County; Portia Ransom Harvey the daughter of Asa and Keziah Keyes Ransom, who is believed to be the first non-native child ever born in Erie County; and Wilson Greatbatch (1919-2011), inventor of the first fully transplantable cardiac pacemaker. There are also many U.S. military veterans interred in Clarence Fillmore Cemetery, including those who fought in the Revolutionary War at places like Bunker Hill and Yorktown.
Clarence Fillmore Cemetery was named after Rev. Dr. Glezen Fillmore, who donated the land on which the cemetery was established. Fillmore was a cousin of President Millard Fillmore and was known as the “founder of Methodism” in Western New York.
While it is certainly an historic cemetery, burial space in Clarence Fillmore is still available. We are here to assist and support families with pre-planning for their eventual needs, or at the time when a death occurs. We pledge reverence and dignity in the cemetery’s daily operations, and are committed to assuring its future.
